The Saxophone Factory is pleased to offer a real and very rare collectors item, a 1950′s acrylic “Grafton” alto saxophone of which only around 3000 were ever made.

Saxophone history has been remarkably free of developmental detours, a testament to the genius of Adolphe Sax and his original design. One of the more interesting mis-steps was the Grafton saxophone, constructed in England between 1950 and 1967 of acrylic, and utilizing a unique mechanism. Today, these instruments are highly prized by collectors.

The Grafton was developed by Hector Sommaruga, an Italian living in London. The instrument takes its name from the street (Grafton Way) where his shop was initially located in the late 1940′s. The decision to manufacture a saxophone from plastic was based upon the relative cheapness of the material rather than an improvement in tonal characteristics. Provisional patent specifications (#’s 604,407 and 604,418) were applied for on September 14, 1945, and a non-working prototype was first shown in 1946.

The instrument was conceived to have a plastic body, bell and key guards, a brass neck (a plastic one would break in attachment) and a mechanism which incorporated a unique springing system. Many of the posts for attaching the mechanism were cast as part of the body. The moulding was subcontracted to the engineering firm of Dc La Rue utilizing a plastic compound developed by Imperial Chemical Industries.

Hector lacked the necessary financing to complete the project, and he was able to obtain the backing of Geoffrey Hawkes (of the firm Boosey and Hawkes) and John E Dallas. The instrument was finally offered for sale to the public in 1950, at a price of 55 pounds, about half the cost on a conventional saxophone at the time.

The Grafton was used by prominent saxophonists Ornette Coleman (who encountered considerable mechanical failure with the instrument) Rudy Vallee and of course Charlie Parker who used the Grafton only outside the United States due to a conflicting endorsement agreement

The plastic construction meant that effectively the Grafton was a failure in its’ time, for the followingreasons: (1) the plastic construction just didn’t sound like other saxophones and was not compatible with section playing. (2) The design of the mechanism gave a very unfamiliar “feel” to players. (3) the plastic body was very prone to cracking and the key guards snapped off easily. (4) Repair technicians were unfamiliar with the instrument and the necessary parts (particularly the unique springs) were not readily available.

Because of this there are very few Grafton saxophones around and in particular in a totally restored condition like this example; the overhaul was carried out by Roy Wood who is the only surviving Grafton employee and there is a letter of authenticity to accompany this one which is priced at £3000.00

This is how it sounds!

Derek Nash visited Bournemouth late in 2009 to demonstrate his wonderful saxophone prowess to a private audience of around 100 musicians, music students and jazz lovers alike.

He had with him a selection of instruments including this rich toned, beautifully made example, from the great Steve Goodson - maker of the Saxgourmet range, which showed resonance and response that can’t usually be found in the baritone version.

This model is exclusively available from The Saxophone Factory

Here’s the important stuff regarding the horn and once you’ve read it watch, or rather LISTEN, to the video at the foot of this post; sorry about the low light level but it’s the SOUND thats important!

The Saxgourmet Baritone is available from us now at £3500.00 plus VAT and we can arrange a VAT sale and / or interest free credit through the Arts Council “Take It Away” subsidised loan scheme which is aimed to make your dream your reality!

Steve Goodson says; “This model is an evolution of the famous Steve Goodson Model baritone, and is much improved over that great horn. It has features never found before on a baritone, because as you faithful readers know, I’m a baritone player by profession. Here are some of the key points:”

(1) The unique Low A mechanism which is operated by the left hand pinky. Of course, the traditional left thumb fingering is also available.

(2) A greatly improved left hand pinky table. It’s smaller for quicker action. It’s actually the same key touches we use on the Voodoo Rex alto.

(3) Redesigned palm keys. They’re smaller and closer together, and much lighter in touch requirement.

(4) Ergonomic key touches for the chromatic F# and high F# keys. You have to try these to appreciate the huge difference.

(5) A revised front F key touch, that is easy on the fingers and really quick.

(6) A much improved screw adjustable F# helper for the lower stack

(7) Totally revised key touch placement for the main stack keys. These are even closer together than the placement we used on the Steve Goodson Model bari.

(8) A revised and much stronger bracing system for the left hand pinky table.

(9) A new pigtail design that greatly facilitates the altissimo and tames the intonation problems of the upper register.

(10) An entirely new bell taper which brings the low B, Bb, and A into perfect tune.

(11) Even more hand cut engraving on the bell, bow, body tube, and now the key cups.

(12) An improved strap hook with better spacing for bari players. 3 rings, of course!

(13) An enlarged Saxgourmet thumbrest specific to this model

(14) Solid copper Maestro resonators from MusicMedic

(15) A new bore taper and resultant tone hole placement for better response. It’s a bit bigger bore than the Steve Goodson Model.

(16) A new countour case with wheels

You can buy an instrument of ANY value and the loan can be part of the price, for example:

Voodoo Rex, nowhere else!

The Saxophone Factory is pleased to let you know that we have available the ONLY two Steve Goodson, Voodoo Rex alto saxophones in the UK from only £2300.00.

These instruments are of the highest quality, producing a rich and matchless sound from a horn which has a very high copper content which means that it has exceptional qualities of resonance and range.

We can supply this model free of VAT and with an interest-free loan courtesy of the “Take it Away” programme sponsored by The Arts Council; you only nee to ask!!

The Voodoo Rex, as played by the famous Derek Nash (latest album “Snapshot” available from iTunes) features the following innovations and benefits:

The Saxgourmet Voodoo Rex series of saxophones are designed for the saxophonist who wants a darker, richer tone with plenty of lower partials. This beautiful tone is achieved through the use of a SOLID 100% copper body, bell, bow, and neck. The copper utilized in the Voodoo Rex undergoes a special proprietary treatment during manufacture which produces a metal which is not only strong and dent resistant but also is wonderfully resonant with a very full and even timbre throughout the range.

SOLID COPPER BODY, BELL, BOW, AND NECK

Unlike the few other “copper” saxophones on the market today, the metal used in the Voodoo Rex undergoes a special treatment which prevents it from being too soft and dead sounding. Our copper has a very “lively” sound which is unequalled in the saxophone industry. Of course, it is available only from us, and is exclusive to the Voodoo Rex model.

ROLLED TONE HOLES

Customers asked for rolled hole model, and we are happy to provide it! Of course, rolled tone holes are very expensive to produce, but they provide a larger pad contact surface and a very different “feel” in the mechanism which is preferred by some players.

HIGH NOTE COMPENSATOR SYSTEM

As long as there have been saxophones, there have been complaints about the intonation of the notes above C3. The Voodoo Rex is equipped with a special automatic mechanism with an additional tone hole which brings the top tones into perfect pitch. This mechanism requires no change in normal fingerings, and is simple and reliable, requiring only one additional key cup and spring.

EXTREMELY ERGONOMIC KEYWORK

When you first hold a Voodoo Rex, you will immediately notice the fit in your hands. It’s quite unlike anything you have ever experienced in a saxophone. The key touches are all right where they should be for a perfect, comfortable playing position. We paid particular attention to the placement and height of the palm keys. The front F and high F# key touch have been enlarged and are much easier to reach. You won’t have to stretch your little finger to reach the low C and low Bb. The chromatic side keys are all right where they should be. You’re going to like it! We also took the extra step of putting large round feet on the upper stack keys to stop the annoying flutter and make for very quiet operation.

DID I MENTION IT’S BEAUTIFUL AS WELL AS FUNCTIONAL?

Every Voodoo Rex is beautifully and extensively hand engraved on the bell, bell flare, bow, body tube, neck, and all key cups. The keywork is lacquered a rich honey gold to contrast with the body, and the entire finish is given an epoxy clear coat to preserve and protect the beauty. The pearl key touches are genuine deep water abalone. The strap hook has three rings for your playing comfort, and an extra large Saxgourmet ergonomic thumbrest is standard equipment.

Many instruments priced for the student and adult beginner markets remove these features, where certain key combinations contribute to facility in chromatic and chordal passages. The Chateau has all of the articulations available on saxophones costing hundreds of pounds more.Keyed to High G :Unlike other sopranos, which often are keyed only to F or F#, the Chateau Soprano Saxophone extends to high G. Two Necks :Curved and straight necks for your personal preference.

To prevent tarnish and protect the silver finish, a durable clear-coat epoxy lacquer is applied at the time of manufacture. The anodized black nickel finish instrument comes with silver keywork, which is also clear-coated with epoxy lacquer, preventing tarnish and oxidation. Gorgeous Floral Engraving :You wouldn’t expect a saxophone in this range to be engraved. You’d be wrong.

Professional-Level Mouthpiece Included :The mouthpiece that arrives with a value-priced saxophone are better off tossed. Not with the Chateau Soprano Saxophone! Sturdy Backpack-Style Case :Both handy and protective, the Chateau Backpack-Style Case is perfect for students with books to carry. Case With Reflective Stripe for Safety :A car’s headlights will light up the reflective stripe on the case.

Precise Intonation in All Registers :An octave is an octave, until you play a student saxophone. However, each Chateau saxophone is carefully designed with our Patent-Pending Tuned Octave Technology to play precisely in tune, for the entire range of the instrument. You’ll never be in tune with the rest of the world until you’re in tune with yourself. That’s why we devoted ourselves to making an in-tune saxophone from the time we began to develop the all-new Chateau. No Stuffy Notes :Many saxophones have certain notes are significantly stuffier than neighboring notes. This makes chromatic and diatonic scales difficult to balance. Not so the Chateau, which is specifically designed so no notes stick out as stuffy or even dead. Precision Engineered Hand Positions for Comfort and Agility :What’s the point of playing a saxophone if your fingers cramp? Every Chateau model had the most comfortable hand positions engineered into the design, so your beginner has one less obstacle.
